Mental performance coaching, mindset coaching, performance mindset coaching, the list goes on. These terms can be confusing and even a bit wishy-washy, and for many people the term can mean many different things. So what I want to do here is clarify what I'm referring to when I say Mental Performance Coaching and provide a little context to clarify where I'm coming from.
When I talk of mental performance coaching I'm referring to a coaching approach to developing the mental aspects of performance. Where a strength and conditioning coach will focus on strength and physical conditioning of the athlete, mental performance coaching focuses on understanding and enhancing the psychological factors that influence performance.
My focus is on applying sport psychology theory and techniques to an individuals performance, supporting the individual with the cognitive (thinking) emotional and the behavioural aspects of performance and aiming to optimise mindset to achieve peak performance and overall well-being.
My background in sport psychology began with a BSc in Psychology and Sport Science, an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology and currently in the final year of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Sport and Exercise Psychology Accredited Route (SEPAR). However from my experience the term "Sport Psychology" can come across as quiet clinical and off putting to many and seeing a sport psychologist can be off putting to many.
I want to make the benefits of working with a sport psychologist more accessible and desirable to people, to open up the opportunities to everyone, because we are always performing and often getting in our own way. With this in mind, id rather talk about what I do rather than what training I have done or what professional title I may have. I feel this then helps people understand what I do, how I can help and the benefits they will get from working with me.
I work with athletes, coaches, and teams, and also performing artists, Individuals and organisational teams to address various psychological challenges, by using a range of techniques and strategies which are underpinned by scientific evidence and research. Some of the key areas that I may work across include:
Mental Skills Training: This involves teaching individuals specific mental skills to enhance focus, concentration, confidence, motivation, and resilience. Techniques such as goal setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and relaxation are commonly used to improve performance and reduce anxiety.
Performance Enhancement: Helping individuals reach their full potential by identifying and addressing mental barriers that may hinder performance. By understanding an individuals mindset and thought processes, we can devise strategies to improve consistency and mental toughness.
Stress and Anxiety Management: Individuals often face high-pressure situations, which can lead to stress and anxiety. Mental performance coaching assists in developing coping mechanisms and stress management techniques to handle pressure effectively.
Injury Rehabilitation (within sport exercise or performing arts): Coping with injuries can be mentally challenging for individuals. Working with injured athletes to maintain a positive mindset, aid in the healing process, and facilitate a smooth return to competition.
Team Building and Communication: For team the focus is on building team cohesion, improving communication, and fostering a positive team culture to enhance overall performance.
Motivation and Goal Setting: Helping individuals set realistic and challenging goals can improve their motivation and commitment to their sport, leading to greater success and personal satisfaction.
Life Skills: Mental Performance coaching can also extend beyond the athletic arena, teaching valuable life skills such as time management, resilience, and self-confidence, which can benefit athletes in other aspects of their lives.
My background in sport psychology means I utilise various assessment techniques, including interviews, questionnaires, and observation, to understand an individuals mindset and to then develop personalised interventions. Collaborating with managers, coaches, trainers, and support staff to create comprehensive support systems for individuals at all levels, from beginners to elite performers.
Mental performance coaching plays a crucial role in maximising your performance, unlocking your potential, promoting mental well-being, and facilitating a positive experience. It is of benefit to any individual engaged in any performance context, from sport, performing arts, physical activity, business or just within your life.
